David Roberts the Colossal Statues in the Plain of Thebes

19th century
For Sale by Darnley Fine Art
Description

First Edition lithograph

Full plate: 204

Presented in a acid free mount

The two Colossi of Memnon, massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III (ruled c.1388-c.1351 BC), guarding the entrance to his mortuary temple.

Later visitors named them after Memnon, a King of Ethiopia who led his armies to aid the defence of Troy and was killed by Achilles.

The statues are shown surrounded by flood waters from the Nile; however when Roberts visited in December the annual Innundation of the Nile would have receded.

Published in the monumental folio edition of 'Egypt & Nubia: from drawings made on the spot' by David Roberts (1796 - 1864), lithographed by Louis Haghe.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Orientalist art refers to works produced by Western artists during the 19th century depicting the landscapes, architecture, and cultures of the Near East, Middle East, and North Africa, often characterised by detailed architectural studies and dramatic atmospheric lighting.

Victorian prints were typically produced using tinted lithography or chromolithography on heavy cotton rag paper, often based on original watercolour sketches or oil paintings.

Authentic period prints usually feature visible publisher details, lithographer marks such as Louis Haghe, hand-tinted colouring, embossed stamps, and age-consistent paper tone without modern mechanical dot matrix patterns.

Style the print within a simple dark timber frame or classic gilt moulding, positioning it above a sideboard or console table alongside natural stone and polished brass accents to complement its warm tones.

Protect antique prints by framing them behind UV-filtering glass, using acid-free mounting boards, avoiding direct sunlight, and maintaining low, stable humidity levels to prevent foxing.
