Early Spring In Monet Country, The Road To Pourville, Normandy 1928 Rene Levrel Large Oil On Canvas

£1,200    $1,606    €1,405
Few places are more closely associated with French Impressionism than Pourville-sur-Mer, whose changing skies and luminous coastline inspired Claude Monet on many occasions. Rather than depicting the famous beach itself, René Levrel (1900-1981) turns his attention to the countryside beyond: a winding road, a solitary figure, bare trees and scattered cottages combine to create a scene of remarkable tranquillity.

The painting''s real strength lies in its remarkable sense of recession into space. The eye begins with the woman in blue, follows the winding road past the horse and cart, and only then drifts into the misty trees and luminous sky beyond. It is a beautifully judged composition, leading the viewer effortlessly through the landscape while capturing the cool, silvery light so characteristic of Normandy.

Signed and dated 1928, the painting belongs to the freshest and most creative period of Levrel''s career. Painted with a light, confident touch, it retains all the immediacy ...
