White Space Antiques has dated this Spanish Religious Oil Painting to the 1750s.
Spanish School, unsigned and unframed, this Baroque painting depicts the Vision of Saint Anthony of Padua, a popular subject in Christian art showing the saint kneeling in prayer as the Christ Child appears to him on a luminous cloud, surrounded by cherubs.

This piece is characteristic of 17th/18th Century, Spanish schools, heavily influenced by Baroque artists like Francisco de Zurbarán, Claudio Coello, Antonio del Castillo y Saavedra or Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. It utilises dramatic chiaroscuro to contrast the shadowed monk with the divine light of the vision.

This very large painting is impressive and would benefit greatly from a gilt frame.
Due to its size, buyer must collect, or arrange collection, from Westbury, Wiltshire.
