C. 1750, Monumental, Oil on Canvas, Vision of Saint Anthony of Padua - Spanish

18th century
Description

C. 1750, Monumental, Oil on Canvas, Vision of Saint Anthony of Padua - Spanish

Spanish School, unsigned and unframed, this Baroque painting depicts the Vision of Saint Anthony of Padua, a popular subject in Christian art showing the saint kneeling in prayer as the Christ Child appears to him on a luminous cloud, surrounded by cherubs.

This piece is characteristic of 17th/18th Century, Spanish schools, heavily influenced by Baroque artists like Francisco de Zurbarán, Claudio Coello, Antonio del Castillo y Saavedra or Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. It utilises dramatic chiaroscuro to contrast the shadowed monk with the divine light of the vision.

This very large painting is impressive and would benefit greatly from a gilt frame.

** Due to its size, buyer must collect, or arrange collection, from Westbury, Wiltshire.

CONDITION:

In overall good condition, with craquelure. A slight scratch above Saint Anthony (as pictured).

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Spanish religious artwork from this era typically features dramatic chiaroscuro, intense devotional subjects, and warm, earthy colour palettes dominated by ochre, deep red, and dark brown tones.

Artists generally used hand-stretched linen or cotton canvas, primed with a gesso ground, and applied hand-ground pigments bound in linseed oil.

Authentic period paintings show age-appropriate craquelure across the paint layer, hand-carved wooden stretchers, natural varnish oxidisation, and signs of historical hand-weaving in the canvas substrate.

Large-scale devotional paintings are frequently styled above sideboards, mantels, or along gallery corridors, serving as strong focal points against neutral or dark saturated paint schemes.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels, clean gently using a soft dry brush, and consult a qualified fine art conservator for surface varnish restoration.
