19thc Mahogany American Empire Sofa

A fine quality 19thc mahogany American Empire sofa, possibly made in Maryland, USA.

The back rail consists of curl mahogany veneer terminating in a scroll rosette either end.

There are elaborate carved arm supports with acanthus decoration which terminate in squared rosette at either end of the front seat rail.

The front seat rail has three recessed curl mahogany panels leading down to the front legs. These have a foliage design blending into lion paw feet with brass castors.

After removing some old upholstery we were surprised to uncover the original calico on the seat saying 'Wachusett heavy sheetings' and also some original woolwork on the back support. Both of these original fabrics remain underneath the new upholstery, and have been professionally cleaned.
