Tintern Abbey by Hopkins Horsley Hobday Horsley (1807-1890). Oil on Canvas.

19th century
Description

'Tintern Abbey' by Hopkins Horsley Hobday Horsley (British, 1807-1890). Titled and signed 'Horsley' verso. Exhibition label verso, reading, 'No. 15 Tintern Abbey 1851'.

H. H. H. Horsley specialised in atmospheric winter scenes, pastoral landscapes and continental views. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists. This work bears a numbered label verso indicating it was exhibited, or certainly intended for exhibition. Whether an atmospheric, pastoral or continental scene, Horsley's paintings usually incorporate a dog, this work does not disappoint.

The scene shows a man with his dog, striding towards two figures tucked in the shadows of the abbey under light of the moon. The work is well executed, with superb use of light to create atmosphere and fantastic depth of field.

There is a stretcher crease to the right side of the work and craquelure in areas, predominantly to the sky but the paint remains stable throughout (please see photographs). The work is housed in a period frame which has been historically overpainted.

A striking work.
