Joseph Appleyard (1908-1960) was a painter and draughtsman specialising in sporting, animal and landscape subjects. He studied during evenings between 1925–32 at Leeds College of Art. Exhibited widely in Yorkshire, having one-man shows in Leeds, where he lived at Far Headingley. Appleyard had his work reproduced in Yorkshire newspapers and magazines, gaining a reputation as a horse painter, and he became honorary secretary of the Yorkshire Group of Artists. Newcastle upon Tyne and Wakefield art galleries hold his work.
 
''Harewood Horse Trials'' is a watercolour and bodycolour measuring 11'' x 15''. It is signed lower right and is titled ''Harewood Horse Trials'' on the back. Also on the back is the inscription ''Painted by Joseph Appleyard, 35, Grove Farm Close, Cookridge, Leeds 16''.
