A Highly Decorative Pair of Carved Gilt Wood and Lacquer Chinese Buddhist Lions

1900 - 1920
Description

A highly decorative and beautifully hand-carved pair of Chinese Buddhist lions, presented as a traditional left- and right-handed matching pair. Each figure is raised on a stepped rectangular plinth and carved from a single section of timber, demonstrating the skill and craftsmanship of the maker.

The lions are depicted in the classic guardian pose, standing proudly with one foreleg raised and the paw resting upon a large pierced ball, a symbol commonly associated with protection, power, and authority. Fine detailing is evident throughout, from the expressive facial features and flowing manes to the carefully rendered bodywork, highlighting the quality of the carving.

Retaining their original gilt finish, the figures have developed a pleasing patina over time, enhancing their character and authenticity. The stepped bases are finished in contrasting red and black lacquer, providing an attractive visual complement to the gilded surfaces.

Both lions remain in good condition. As is often found with antique carved timber pieces, each has developed an age-related shrinkage crack—one to the front and the other to the reverse. These have been sympathetically filled and coloured, blending well with the overall appearance and preserving the integrity and character of the pieces.

An attractive and eye-catching pair of traditional Chinese guardian lions, offering both decorative appeal and cultural significance.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Historically known as guardian lions or Foo Dogs, these sculpted figures originated in Chinese Buddhism as symbolic protectors for temples, imperial palaces, and residences. They are traditionally portrayed in pairs representing complementary forces, with stylized features and symbolic accessories like brocade balls.

Craftsmen hand-carved dense timber before applying layers of natural lacquer to seal and smooth the wood grain. Thin leaf, typically gold or brass foil, was then applied over the lacquered ground to create a luminous, durable gilded surface.

Authentic examples exhibit natural wear patterns, shrinkage line cracks along timber joinery, and soft oxidisation or wear to the gilded layer. Genuine historical pieces display clear hand-tooling marks and layered depth in the underlying lacquer that modern cast reproductions lack.

Position the pair symmetrically on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to establish visual structure and symmetry. Their warm gold tone and intricate carved texture contrast effectively against modern minimalist backboards, dark painted walls, or traditional wood paneling.

Dust gently using a dry, soft feather duster or soft-bristled brush, avoiding water, commercial polishes, or chemical solvents that could strip gilding or dissolve historical lacquer. Maintain a stable indoor humidity level to prevent the underlying timber substrate from warping or splitting.
