FAQs

Still life oil paintings depict arranged inanimate objects such as fruit, glassware, and tableware within a composed setting. Originating in antiquity and gaining prominence during the 17th century, this genre focuses on light, texture, and symbolic arrangements.

Traditional oil paintings consist of mineral or organic pigments bound in drying oils, applied onto stretched canvas, timber panels, or artist board. Frame constructions typically feature timber embellished with plaster or gesso mouldings and gold leaf finishes.

Authentic oil paintings display natural craquelure, which refers to fine age cracking across the varnish and paint layers. Additional indicators include hand-stretched canvas on wooden strainers, surface oxidation on the reverse side, and period-appropriate framing techniques.

Traditional artwork can be hung above a sideboard or mantelpiece to create a focal point in a contemporary dining room. Combining an ornate gilded frame with modern, streamlined furniture provides an engaging contrast in textures and eras.

Oil paintings should be displayed away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources to prevent cracking or fading. Dust the surface gently using a clean, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or liquid cleaning solutions.
