Chinese Carved Lacquered and Hand Painted Figure of a Wealthy Scholar

1900 - 1920
Description

This highly decorative Chinese hand carved solid wood and gesso figure which is raised on a moulded plinth, depicts a Chinese nobleman. He has a book in one hand and a page turning implement in the other. The man is sitting on an ornate dragon backed throne chair whilst his feet rest on a tiger skin rug. He is wearing the most elaborate armour with a decorative robe, headdress and boots. His face and hands are painted in a bold red colour with fine black detailing. He also has facial whiskers inlaid in horse hair.

The figure has been very well carved out of a solid block of dense hardwood with some detailed elements applied and detailed in gesso, all of which has been hand finished in smooth lacquer in polychrome colours with some elements enhanced with gilding.

This highly decorative figure is in excellent original condition with some very minor age related losses to the detailing and finish.

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Polychrome carved wood figures have a long history in Chinese art, originating in religious and ancestral traditions across the Ming and Qing dynasties. These figures often depict deities, scholars, or ancestral ancestors dressed in elaborate ceremonial robes.

These sculptures were typically carved from native woods such as camphor, pine, or elm, then coated with gesso and layered lacquer. Pigments derived from natural minerals were applied alongside gilding using real gold leaf.

Authentic pieces generally feature natural shrinkage cracks in the wood, soft wear to the lacquer layers, and oxidisation of the gilding over time. Construction details like hand-carved joinery and traces of original gesso underlying the paint also indicate age.

Place the figure as a standalone accent on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or sideboard paired with minimalist modern decor. The vibrant colours and detailed motifs offer a striking visual contrast against neutral walls and clean-lined furniture.

Keep the sculpture away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and high humidity to prevent wood movement and flaking lacquer. Dust gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or harsh solvents.
