This highly decorative Chinese hand carved solid wood and gesso figure which is raised on a moulded plinth, depicts a Chinese nobleman. He has a book in one hand and a page turning implement in the other. The man is sitting on an ornate dragon backed throne chair whilst his feet rest on a tiger skin rug. He is wearing the most elaborate armour with a decorative robe, headdress and boots. His face and hands are painted in a bold red colour with fine black detailing. He also has facial whiskers inlaid in horse hair.The figure has been very well carved out of a solid block of dense hardwood with some detailed elements applied and detailed in gesso, all of which has been hand finished in smooth lacquer in polychrome colours with some elements enhanced with gilding.This highly decorative figure is in excellent original condition with some very minor age related losses to the detailing and finish.Chinese, circa 1920Height 32cm x width 20cm x depth 18cmRobert Belcher Antiq...
