An Unusual Set of 4 Early 20th Century Painted Soldiers on Panel

1900 - 1920
Description

An unusual set of four painted wooden panels depicting British soldiers from different regiments dating back to 1572, each inscribed to the reverse with details of the regiment portrayed and the relevant date. The painted panels bear certain similarities to the work of E. V. Howell, the British officer and artist who, following injuries sustained during the First World War, produced a series of painted military figures on wooden boards. Whilst no direct attribution is suggested, as his style cut out soldiers standing on a base, the present group shares a comparable format and spirit, and may similarly have been created by a serving or former soldier with a particular interest in military history and regimental dress.

Measurements: 21.5 cm x 14 cm (each)

British, early 20th century

Declaration

Rob Hall Antiques has dated these Antique Painted Soldier Panels to the 1920s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Military panel paintings and uniform studies were created as decorative regimental artwork, folk art commemorations, or theatrical props depicting historical uniform evolution.

These artworks were executed in oil or tempera paint directly onto solid wood or plywood boards, often using hand-mixed pigments and finished with a clear protective varnish.

Authentic period panels demonstrate natural timber shrinkage, slight paint flaking or craquelure, edge wear, and accurate historical details in uniform tailoring and weaponry.

They can be displayed together as a gallery wall grouping, rested against dark painted walls in a study, or mounted above traditional furniture to create historical visual accent points.

Dust gently using a dry microfibre cloth, avoid applying wet cleaning solutions, and store the panels away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent timber movement.
