This framed artwork is an original watercolour drawing on paper produced in the illustrative caricature style during the 1930 period. The composition features a humorous male figure wearing a light blue ballet tutu and pointe shoes, performing a dynamic pose against a plain background. The piece is set behind glass within a simple black timber frame, complemented by a wide cream mount board that borders the illustration. The visible materials comprise paper, watercolour, wood and glass, displaying a clean finish typical of works from this era. The artwork measures 49 cm high, 41 cm wide, and 3 cm deep. It fits well in a home today when hung on a narrow wall space, bringing character and wit to a hallway, study, or eclectic living area as part of a maximalist wonderland design scheme.

FAQs

Caricature artwork gained widespread prominence in eighteenth and nineteenth-century Europe as a popular medium for social and political satire. Artists used watercolour for its quick drying time and fluid washes, allowing rapid execution of humorous and exaggerated figurative studies.

Original watercolours are typically rendered on heavy rag paper or board using water-soluble pigments. They are classically presented behind protective glass within an acid-free mountboard and timber frame to prevent contact between the artwork and the glazing.

Authentic watercolours display distinct paper texture absorption, visible brush strokes, and subtle tone variations where pigments overlap. Under magnification, original works lack the uniform dot matrix pattern characteristic of mechanical print processes.

Humorous or illustrative works serve as compelling conversation pieces when integrated into a curated gallery wall or hung in smaller spaces such as hallways, powder rooms, or home offices. Simple black framing allows the subject matter to contrast against neutral or textured backdrops.

To prevent fading and paper degradation, watercolour art should be displayed away from direct sunlight and harsh UV exposure. Maintain stable humidity levels to avoid cockling of the paper, and ensure conservation-grade, acid-free mounting materials are used.
