Tobias Stranover (Circle), Exotic Birds in an Arcadian Landscape - Antique Oil Painting

18th century
Description

This early 18th-century oil painting by an artist working in the circle of Transylvanian painter Tobias Stranover (1684-1756) depicts various exotic and ornamental birds within an Arcadian landscape.

At the centre, a peacock perches upon a stone ledge, its long tail descending in a cascade of russet and green eyespots, while nearby stand a crowned crane, a scarlet macaw, a waterfowl, and a resting duck. Behind them, fragments of classical architecture lend the scene an atmosphere of antiquity. In the distance, beyond still water and avenues of trees, a softened landscape dissolves into pale blue light.

The composition belongs to a long European tradition of decorative bird painting. During the late 17th and early 18th centuries, exotic birds arriving through expanding trade networks became symbols of wealth and learning. Artists responded by creating elaborate avian tableaux in which species from entirely different climates and continents coexisted harmoniously.

Our painting displays the influence of Tobias Stranover, particularly in the theatrical arrangement of the birds and the warm, atmospheric handling of the landscape. Stranover, born in Transylvania and later active in England, was influenced by the bird maestro, Melchior d’Hondecoeter. His works often seemed to present birds as actors upon a grand stage - each given a role to perform. Here, the peacock assumes a central dramatic lead, its elevated posture and descending tail creating the compositional anchor around which the other creatures gather.

Perhaps in each of these feathered creatures, we imagine human characteristics. And we all know a peacock.

Such paintings were typically commissioned for country houses, where they complemented interiors shaped by collecting culture. Imagine various cabinet displays, imported porcelain, and abundant gardens.

Held in a later gilt frame with bold gadrooned ornament and a stepped inner border.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Overall size: 25½” x 21” / 65cm x 54cm

Year of creation: c. 1720

Labels & Inscriptions: Two stamps on the reverse, probably relating to a 19th-century restoration. Chalk inscription on the frame, which appears to reference previous ownership.

Provenance: Private collection, Germany.

Condition: Cleaned. Revarnished. Canvas relined. Faint stretcher marks. Later stretcher. Fine craquelure in areas. The paint layer is stable. Frame in good condition with minor age-related wear.
