A Fine Marble Bust of Diana the Huntress Signed R. Mattei

19th century
Description

A striking and highly decorative carved marble bust depicting Diana the Huntress, raised upon an elegant green marble column pedestal.

This impressive neoclassical study portrays Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt, shown with serene expression and finely detailed coiffure, her draped garment falling gracefully from one shoulder in the classical manner. The bust displays excellent carving throughout, particularly to the facial features, hair and floral detailing, and is signed R. Mattei.

Executed in white statuary marble, the sculpture stands on its original turned socle and is presented upon a substantial green marble pedestal, giving the piece wonderful scale and presence. A sophisticated Grand Tour–style decorative object, ideally suited to a hall, drawing room or conservatory interior.

Inspired by the celebrated “Diana of Versailles” type held in the Louvre Museum, Paris, this piece reflects the enduring popularity of classical mythology in late 19th century Italian sculpture.

Condition:Good antique condition with age-related wear and surface marks consistent with age. Presents beautifully.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical sculpture, emerging in the mid-18th century, draws direct inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman art. It is characterised by symmetry, refined drapery, idealized human forms, and subjects drawn from classical mythology.

Sculptors historically preferred fine-grained white marble, such as Italian Carrara or Greek Pentelic marble, for its luminous translucent quality and uniform texture suitable for delicate carving.

Authentic period sculptures often exhibit subtle chisel marks in less visible areas, delicate hand-carved surface patination, and legitimate sculptor signatures incised directly into the marble base or reverse.

A marble bust acts as a focal point when positioned on a dark wooden sideboard, mantelpiece, or dedicated column pedestal, creating visual contrast alongside contemporary art and minimalist architecture.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or natural bristle brush. Avoid acidic or abrasive commercial cleaners, using only distilled water and mild neutral soap for gentle surface cleansing when necessary.
