Exceptional Victorian Elkington & Co Silver Plate Inkstand – Neo Classical Desk Stand – c1875

A beautifully detailed and highly decorative Victorian Elkington & Co silver plate on Brass inkstand, dating to around 1880, and designed in the elegant Neo Classical style for which Elkington became internationally renowned.

This impressive circular inkstand is raised on a shaped circular foot and centred with a covered glass inkwell, surrounded by richly embossed and finely detailed classical scenes throughout. The quality of the decoration is exceptional, with crisp relief work and striking visual depth across the entire piece.

Particularly eye-catching is the inkwell cover, beautifully decorated with a dramatic scene of four charging horses, adding movement, energy, and sculptural appeal to this already remarkable desk accessory.

The silver plate has developed a wonderful, warm patina over time, with attractive areas of copper bleed emerging through the silvering, giving the piece a rich and authentic antique character highly sought after by collectors.

The underside is clearly marked for Elkington & Co with the date letter “O” for 1875, confirming period and maker authenticity.

Condition:

Presented in excellent antique condition overall. The original glass liner appears undamaged, and the body is free of dents, splits, or creases. Lid fits well and remains sound and functional. The natural metal bleeds through the silver plate, adding warmth and a desirable antique character.
