FAQs

Nineteenth-century landscape painting is characterised by a shift towards naturalism, capturing atmospheric effects, rural life, and the grandeur of the countryside with detailed brushwork.

These works are usually executed in oil paint applied to stretched woven canvas or wooden panels, framed in hand-gilded wood or gesso frames.

Authenticity is assessed through canvas ageing, craquelure patterns, pigment analysis, stretcher construction, and the presence of period signatures or exhibition labels on the reverse.

Antique landscape paintings add depth and a sense of history to contemporary spaces, working effectively as focal points above mantelpieces, sideboards, or along staircases.

Preservation requires avoiding direct sunlight and high humidity fluctuations, keeping the canvas dust-free with a soft brush, and refraining from using chemical cleaning agents.
