FAQs

Dutch genre painting typically focuses on scenes of everyday life, ordinary people, and domestic interiors, often influenced by 17th-century masters like David Teniers the Younger with a strong emphasis on narrative and realism.

These works were traditionally executed in oil paint on stretched linen canvas or occasionally wood panels, housed in hand-carved and gilded wooden frames finished with composition gesso.

Authentication involves examining the canvas weave, craquelure patterns in the paint layer, stretcher frame construction, and the aging characteristics of the gesso and gold leaf on the frame under magnification and ultraviolet light.

Pairing a heavily framed antique painting with minimalist contemporary surroundings creates a striking focal point, adding historical depth and textural contrast to clean, modern walls.

Antique paintings should be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity, maintained in stable ambient temperatures, and cleaned periodically by a professional conservator without harsh chemical solvents.
