This unusual mahogany writing table and side table dates from the Chippendale Revival period around 1880. Constructed from rich timber with a warm brown finish and a pleasing patina, the piece demonstrates traditional craftsmanship. Visible details include cockpen-style geometric lattice pierced fretwork panels on the sides, a shaped front apron, a curved lower shelf undertier, and plain square section legs. The timber displays light wear and tear commensurate with age and practical use. Measuring 73 cm high, 72 cm wide and 45 cm deep, this heavy table serves multiple practical functions in a traditional or modern interior. Placed at the end of a sofa, it provides a convenient surface for lamps, books, or decorative items, while the lower shelf offers additional storage space. Its distinct architectural lattice panels and compact proportions suit living rooms, studies, or hallways in an English country house setting.

Originated in 18th-century England by cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, this style incorporates Anglo-Asian motifs, most notably geometric fretwork, pierced lattice panels, and straight square leg profiles.

High-grade dense timbers such as West Indian or Cuban mahogany were predominantly selected for their structural strength, allowing craftsmen to execute intricate pierced fretwork without sacrificing stability.

Look for hand-sawn secondary timber, traditional hand-cut joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, natural wear patterns along footrests, and authentic oxidisation on unpolished surfaces.

Anchor the piece as an accent adjacent to modern tailored upholstery, using its geometric woodwork to add historical contrast against plain plastered walls or soft linen textures.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and central heating sources.
