Herbert Dicksee "Cocker Spaniel" Original Etching

Description

Herbert Thomas Dicksee was a British painter born in 1862. He was best known for his sensitive depictions of animals including dogs, lions and tigers. Dicksee’s family was well-ingrained into the art world; his father was an artist and his nephew, Sir Frank Dicksee, was the president of the Royal Academy in London from 1924–1928. Herbert went on to study at the Slade School of Art in London on a scholarship, and his first painting was exhibited in 1881. Many of Dicksee’s most famous works were transcribed into prints and etchings published by Klackner of London. He died on February 20, 1942 in Hampstead, England.

"Cocker Spaniel" is the original etching, signed in pencil by the artist Herbert Dicksee. It measures 12"x 9" and is framed in a nice old hogarth frame giving an overall size of 22"x 18". On the back is the original label giving the title "Cocker Spaniel".

Canine printmaking gained widespread popularity in Great Britain during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Artists such as Herbert Dicksee rendered detailed portraits of domestic and hunting dogs, which were reproduced via intaglio etching processes for contemporary art collectors.

Original etchings were produced using copper or zinc plates coated with an acid-resistant wax ground. Designs were drawn into the ground with an etching needle, etched into the metal with acid, inked, and pulled onto heavy cotton rag paper using a high-pressure rolling press.
