Antique Early Metalware 18thc Full Set of Meat Skewers and Holder Dated 1722 Engraved Th. English.

18th century
Description

A rare set of 18thc English iron meat skewers complete with original shaped holder....these would have been used by the "down-hearth" fire , when cooking meat and would have helped keep the meat together on the spit as it cooked slowly...it is very unusual to have a complete set of skewers as usually they were discarded or lost over the years of constant use in the large household....and even rarer to have such an early date 1722 with the owners initials T. H....for an illustration of early meat skewers see "Iron and Brass Implements of the English House" by J. Seymour Lindsay , first illustration in the book of a sixteenth century Surrey down-hearth.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

In Georgian kitchens, meat skewers were utilised to secure joints of meat during roasting on a spit or to support joints while carving. Sets were typically suspended from wall-mounted holders near the hearth for convenient access during meal preparation.

Early 18th-century meat skewers were commonly hand-forged from iron or steel by local blacksmiths, featuring hammered terminals, pierced decoration, or engraved initials and dates. Silver and pewter versions were also produced for table presentation in wealthy households.

Authentic early pieces display hand-forged irregularities, subtle hammer marks, and surface patination or light oxidisation consistent with age. Inscriptions, including makers marks, initials, or year dates, were typically hand-punched or engraved directly into the metal.

Antique ironware and skewers can be wall-mounted as decorative culinary history displays in country kitchens or modern dining spaces. Hanging the set near a hearth, kitchen island, or exposed brickwork provides historic texture and visual focus.

Historic ironware must be kept dry to prevent active corrosion and rust formation. Maintenance should involve gentle dusting and occasional application of microcrystalline wax or mineral oil to preserve the dark surface patina.
