Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Vienna cold-painted bronzes are cast bronze figures decorated with multiple layers of unfired oil paint or enamel colours. Emerging in Austria during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these pieces were celebrated for their vibrant colours, realistic texturing, and detailed depictions of Orientalist, animal, and whimsical subjects.

These sculptures were cast using the lost-wax method, carefully chased by craftsmen to add fine texture, and then painted cold using enamel-based pigments. Unlike hot-patinated bronze, the paint was not baked on, allowing artists to achieve a rich palette of colours directly on the surface.

Authentic pieces usually feature fine surface chasing, heavy cast metal weight, and natural wear patterns where original paint has thinned over time. Many authentic Austrian bronzes carry foundry stamps, such as the letter B within a urn motif associated with the Franz Bergman foundry, alongside impression numbers.

A cold-painted bronze sculpture functions well as a focal point on a desk, mantelpiece, or bookshelf within a library, study, or traditional living area. Pairing the piece with dark woods, leather books, or muted textiles highlights the intricate polychrome finish.

Maintain cold-painted bronzes by dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush. Avoid water, liquid detergents, or chemical solvents, as moisture and harsh chemicals can strip or dissolve the delicate unfired paint layer.
