This late 19th-century Victorian side table originates from Maples, crafted in a traditional English country house style from dark brown mahogany with a white marble top. The piece possesses a bow-fronted shape, a raised shaped gallery back, a single drawer fitted with two brass swing handles, and slender square tapered legs resting on brass castors and united by side stretchers. Visual inspection reveals rich dark wood tones, polished brass hardware with ornate backplates, and subtly flared feet. Measuring 95 cm high, 92 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, the table provides a compact yet functional surface. Suitable for placement in a hallway, stairway landing, or living room, this table serves well as a display surface or writing desk. The top surface accommodates small decorative items, a desk accessory, and two candlesticks. The lower drawer offers concealed storage for stationery or daily essentials. The piece integrates easily into traditional or transitional interiors, adding refined period character to practical home spaces.

Popularised during the Victorian era, bow-fronted tables with marble tops were frequently manufactured by established cabinetmakers like Maples & Co. These pieces often served dual purposes as washstands, dressing tables, or writing desks in affluent residential settings.

Tables from this period typically feature solid mahogany or mahogany veneer frames over hardwood carcasses, fitted with hand-cut dovetail drawer joints. Tops were fitted with carved marble slabs, often combined with gallery backs and square tapered legs supported on brass castors.

Authentic pieces often feature stamped maker marks or metal trade plates inside drawers or on the underside of the frame. Additional indicators include period-correct drawer linings, original brass hardware, and hand-finished marble edges showing appropriate patination.

A marble top side table functions well as a hallway console, a dedicated writing desk in a home office, or a statement vanity table in a bedroom. The contrast of warm mahogany and cool white marble pairs smoothly with both traditional and contemporary neutral colour schemes.

Clean the marble surface with a pH-neutral cleaner to prevent etching on the stone. The mahogany framework should be dusted with a soft microfibre cloth and treated periodically with natural beeswax polish to maintain the timber finish, avoiding harsh liquid chemicals.
