Victorian Historical Scene Landscape Oil Painting

A very interesting oil on canvas depicting a historical scene in a landscape setting. The painting shows a view at dusk with a column of riders returning home across a bridge to a huge manor house. There are some wonderful details in the riders, all individually picked out, and in the house with the red glow from the windows indicating the fires inside. The work has a great feeling of the end of day with the last light of day reflected in the sky and clouds and the historical setting of the piece in the Seventeenth century. The painting is signed by monogram and on the label to the reverse the artist’s name is given as Henry Mason, sadly there appears to be no record of this artist which is a mystery given the obvious quality of the piece. The label also gives the remnants of a title which partly contains the word return however cannot be fully read. The work is in very good condition it has had some minor overpaint in the past to the moat area. The gilt frame is the original though it has been overgilt. The whole has a wonderful decorative appeal as both a landscape work and historical piece with a great sense of the Gothic Revival. C.1880.
