Roland Green (1890-1972) was a noted artist. His studio was beside Hickling Broad in Norfolk his paintings are usually associated with depictions of the local birdlife, but he was also a taxidermist, having been trained to skin, stuff and set up birds by his father (Also Rowland) a taxidermist who had worked for a time at the Natural History Museum in London, which gave Roland (the son) a fine knowledge of anatomy and plumage.
His book; ‘Wingtips, published in 1947 covers the identification of birds in flight’. He illustrated some 12 books including The Birds of Australia by Gregory Mathews (London, Witherby, 12 vols., 1910-27) following the death in 1912 of J. G. Keulemans, who illustrated the first four volumes. Other books include Birds in Flight by W. P. Pycraft, The Bird Book by Enid Blyton, Wing to Wing by E. H. Ware, The Ladybird Book of British Wild Animals by George Cansdale and painted several RSPB Christmas cards between 1920 and 1948.
Note: One of the cases is clearly signed Rowland Green, but as father & son were both skilled in taxidermy, I am unsure which Rowland Green. I can only speculate the cases are by the son (artist) as both cases have very competent scenic oil paintings for the backdrop.
