This brass empty shell case from 1910 represents the First World War military style. The cylindrical body exhibits a warm, polished brass coloration with a stippled background texture and engraved oak leaf foliage. A prominent shield crest occupies the centre, featuring the word "ROBAI" inscribed across its surface, accompanied by a scalloped rim at the top and a circular base moulding at the bottom. The object measures 22.5 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 9 cm deep. Suitable for placement on a mantelpiece in a gentleman's library or study, it functions practically as a vase for dried florals or stands alone as a decorative historical ornament.

Trench art refers to decorative or functional items created by military personnel, war prisoners, or civilians using discarded war material such as brass artillery shell casings during or immediately after the conflict.

Artillery shell cases were made primarily of brass alloy, which was worked using basic hand tools such as steel punches, hammers, and improvised chisels to create stippled, repousse, and chased patterns.

Authentic trench art typically displays factory ordnance stamps or dates on the shell base, hand-worked decorative repousse or punched motifs, and often features specific battleground names or military insignia.

Trench art brass shell cases can be repurposed as unique flower vases, pencil holders, or standalone decorative accents on mantelpieces, sideboards, and bookshelves.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth. If a polished look is preferred, apply a specialist brass cleaner, or leave untreated to allow the natural surface oxidisation and aged patina to remain intact.
