First-rate Japanese Meiji (early 20thC) bronze of Ebisu by Yamazake Choun, Imperial Household Artist and Sculptor. Ebisu, the god of fishermen and luck and one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, is depicted in typical fashion with fishing rod (silver) in his right hand and a fish (red patina) under his left arm, standing on a rock. Signature at rear. Original signed box. 31.5cm tall, x 18cm wide x 11cm deep. Weight 3.5kg,

Born into a family of potters in Fukuoka, Yamazaki Choun (1867-1954) was apprenticed at age 17 under Hakata Buddhist sculptor Takada Matashiro. He won an award at the 4th Domestic Industrial Exposition in 1895, and his talent was recognized by Takamura Koun (1852-1934), a judge at the time (his realistic sculptures showcase the vivid and exquisite sculpting style taught by Takamura Koun).
