This large oil portrait painting dates from 1940 and follows a historicist revival style depicting the biblical figures David and Goliath within an extensive landscape background. Rendered in oil paint on a relined canvas, the artwork displays a vibrant palette of gold, green and blue, showing a heavily armoured warrior holding a spear and a shield while standing on a rocky path opposite a smaller figure across a stream. The painting is mounted inside a burr-walnut-effect moulded wooden frame finished in gilt, exhibiting clean surfaces and professionally relined canvas. Measuring 96 cm high, 78.7 cm wide and 6.3 cm deep, the piece works well placed above a mantel in a traditional living space or gentleman's library. It brings a historic narrative and rich colour to a room interior, offering a focal point for wall display.

FAQs

Narrative biblical oil paintings from this era often revisit classical and Renaissance themes, depicting famous historical or religious conflicts with dramatic, figurative detail and stylized period armour.

Artists typically used oil paints mixed with natural pigments applied over primed linen or cotton canvas, housed within moulded wooden frames finished with leaf gilding or varnish.

Look for natural surface craquelure, age-appropriate darkening on the reverse canvas, traditional stretcher bar construction, and layered oil pigment application under magnification.

Place a large figurative painting as a focal statement piece above a mantelpiece or sideboard, pairing detailed artwork with neutral walls to highlight the tones and frame detail.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and direct heat sources, dusting the frame lightly with a soft dry brush and consulting a conservator for cleaning.
