Description

Full of provençal light and warmth is this large oil by René Durey (1890-1959), dating from his Fauve period, the 1920s.

An influential and highly regarded artist, Durey's first major exhibition was in 1917 in the Huyghens Room, alongside Moïse Kisling and Henry de Waroquier. He had solo shows at the mythical Galerie Bernheim-Jeune in 1919. Bernheim-Jeune had started by presenting works by Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard, Paul Cézanne, Henri-Edmond Cross, Kees van Dongen, Henri Matisse, Le Douanier Rousseau, Raoul Dufy, Maurice de Vlaminck, Amedeo Modigliani and Maurice Utrillo. In 1924, Durey showed his work at the Galerie Eugene Druet , where Bonnard and Rouault exhibited in the same year. Durey's work was collected by Jonas Netter, the great connoisseur of Montparnasse Art.

Réné Durey was a member of the Salon des Indépendants, and had a major retrospective in Stockholm in 1948.

Two works by René Durey are in the collections of the Pompidou Centre/National Museum of Modern Art in Paris. In the UK, a work by the artist is in the Wilson Gallery and Museum in Cheltenham. His work was shown in the 1983 exhibition: ''The Aura Of Neo-Impressionism'' at the Indianapolis Museum of Art in the US.

Our oil on canvas, measuring 100 x 65 cm and with a professional historical restoration to the top right corner, is signed at the lower right. Bearing an old collection label to the verso, it is titled "Paysage près de Saint Tropez". The overall size in a simple oak frame is 106 x 71 cm.
