Born in Mannheim in 1871, Kochendörfer studied sculpture at the Munich Academy of Art. He refined his skills further by working extensively with marble in Rome and Florence. Upon returning to Germany, he worked for the Kunstanstalt Schumacher & Co. in Osterode am Harz.
