Carved Alabaster Nude Figure by Fritz Kochendorfer. Circa 1900

Description

On black marble base, with brass makers plaque indent to the underside of the base, plus signed F Kochendorfer with the number ‘7758 VIII 59’ inscribed to base of figure.

Height 36cm.

Fritz Kochendörfer (1871–1942) was a prominent German sculptor known for his prolific work in the Art Nouveau style, specializing in busts, figurines, and decorative objects. Born in Mannheim in 1871, Kochendörfer studied sculpture at the Munich Academy of Art. He refined his skills further by working extensively with marble in Rome and Florence. Upon returning to Germany, he worked for the Kunstanstalt Schumacher & Co. in Osterode am Harz. He eventually established his own successful workshops, at one point employing over 100 people to produce marble, terracotta, and stone sculptures.

Art Nouveau alabaster sculptures produced around 1900 reflect the eras focus on natural forms, fluid contours, and classical figurative subjects. Sculptors favoured alabaster for its delicate translucency and suited workability for detailed hand carving.

Genuine alabaster is a fine-grained form of gypsum or calcite shaped using specialized handheld chisels and rasps. Once polished to reveal its natural grain, the figure was typically fitted to a dark marble plinth to add structural stability and material contrast.
