Lucien Gibert was a French sculptor and artist best known for his sensitive treatment of the human figure and his commitment to classical and modern figurative traditions. He produced many sculptures as state commissions and numerous medals for the French Mint. His groups with massive stone figures adorn the stadiums of Charléty, Courneuve, Rue Championnet, and other works can be found in numerous museums across France. His works on paper are relatively rare, and reflect his innate understanding of form and composition. Gibert was recognised for his contribution to French art when he was made Commander of the National Order of Merit.

This original red chalk drawing on paper by the French sculptor and artist Lucien Gibert (1904–1988) dates to around 1935 and is signed by the artist in the lower right. Executed during a formative period of Gibert’s career, the work demonstrates his deep engagement with the classical female nude and his sculptural understanding of the human form.

The drawing depicts a seated nude woman, captured in a private, introspective moment as she gathers her hair. Gibert’s confident use of red chalk allows for soft modelling and subtle tonal variation, emphasising the rounded volumes of the body and the natural rhythm of the pose. The figure is compact yet dynamic, with carefully observed anatomy and a strong sense of weight and balance—qualities that reflect the artist’s parallel practice as a sculptor.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Art Deco figurative drawings from the 1930s typically feature clean sculptural lines, stylised forms, and classical proportions combined with modernist simplicity.

Sanguine studies utilise red iron-oxide chalk or crayon applied to paper, allowing artists to create delicate tonal shading and warm anatomical contours.

Authentic period drawings often display paper aging, contemporary artist signatures or studio stamps, appropriate matting, and evidence of hand-rendered mediums under magnification.

A framed nude drawing adds historic character when positioned above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or integrated into a gallery wall within neutral interiors.

Keep drawings framed under UV-protective glass with acid-free mounting materials, away from direct sunlight and high humidity areas to prevent fading and foxing.
