Rare Bridgewater Tavern Jug

Description

A large scale Tavern jug with a most attractive orange\brown treacle glaze, decorated with the London coat of arms, figures, grape vines, hops and crowns. To the front is a handle with decorative swags and a Patent mark. There is some fritting and rubbing to the applied decoration. A wonderful and scarce piece, I have seen small versions of these wares but never in this large size

This nineteenth-century Victorian Country tavern jug is formed from earthenware with a honey-ochre glaze and an orange-brown treacle finish. Raised sprigged relief mouldings embellish the bulbous body, depicting the London coat of arms with figures on one side, a crown emblem near the top rim, and a grapevine relief moulding with grape clusters along the lower section. A sturdy loop handle arches from the upper body to the neck, while a patent mark and decorative mouldings sit near the pouring spout. Fritting and rubbing appear on the applied decoration, showing signs of handling wear across the glazed surface.
