FAQs

Buffets of this style originated in rural French provinces, traditionally crafted for dining rooms and kitchens to store tableware, linens, and provisions. Regional carpenters utilised locally available timbers like beech and oak, applying practical painted finishes to protect the wood.

These pieces are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as beech or oak, featuring traditional joinery methods like mortise and tenon. Tops often consist of thick, unpainted timber planks designed to withstand heavy daily use, while the bases receive multiple coats of historical-formula paint.

Authenticity is determined by examining tool marks, hand-cut joinery, period-appropriate hardware, and the natural ageing of the timber and paint layers. Hand-planed surfaces, irregular plank widths, and signs of historical wear and tear without modern alterations indicate age.

This type of furniture serves as a grounding focal point in contemporary dining rooms, kitchens, or living spaces. Pair the piece with neutral walls, minimalist ceramics, and brass or ceramic accessories to balance its rustic character with modern clean lines.

Preserve the finish by keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and fluctuating heat sources to prevent timber splitting or paint flaking. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners, treating the wooden top periodically with natural beeswax.
