FAQs

Nineteenth-century landscape painting often focused on realism, naturalism, and pastoral scenes, frequently capturing the changing effects of light and weather on the British or European countryside.

These works were typically created using oil paints applied to woven linen canvases, stretched over wooden strainer or stretcher frames, and housed in hand-carved, gessoed, and gilded wooden frames.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of the canvas weave, the ageing and craquelure of the oil paint, the construction and wear of the stretcher bars, and the characteristics of the period frame.

An antique painting adds depth and historical contrast to contemporary spaces when hung against neutral walls, paired with minimalist picture lighting, or placed above foundational furniture pieces.

Preservation involves keeping the artwork away from direct sunlight and high humidity, avoiding chemical cleaners on the canvas or frame, and occasionally consulting a professional conservator for surface cleaning.
