FAQs

Victorian watercolour paintings often focus on naturalism, dramatic topography, and atmospheric lighting, reflecting the eras fascination with the sublime power of nature.

These works were typically created using gum arabic-based watercolours applied to heavy rag paper or watercolour board, often set behind glass with a protective mount.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the paper stock for watermark clues, observing the ageing of the pigments and paper, and checking for period framing and signatures.

An antique watercolour adds gravitas when framed simply to let the artwork breathe, and can be paired with neutral walls and subtle lighting to create a focal point in a room.

To prevent fading, watercolours should be displayed away from direct sunlight, maintained at a stable temperature and humidity, and framed using acid-free materials and UV-protective glazing.
