A wonderful Japanese carved wooden bear in excellent antique condition. The bear is rendered in a deep, rich brown and shown in a powerful stance, one paw raised and resting on a tree stump. The sculptor has worked the timber with exceptional skill, carving deeply textured fur, sharply defined claws, and an expressive open mouth that lends the piece a vivid sense of movement and presence. Its naturalistic base, shaped to evoke roots or forest terrain, grounds the composition and heightens its sculptural drama. A fine example of Kibori Kuma carving, it embodies the rich folk-art tradition of Hokkaido and the craftsmanship for which these iconic works are celebrated.
