A beautifully carved Japanese wooden bear in excellent antique condition. This sculpture depicted a powerful bear in a forward-leaning stance as it grasps a fish in its paws. The sculptor has creating deeply textured fur, sharply defined claws, and beautifully rendered scales on the fish. The open mouth and focused expression give the bear a vivid sense of movement and intent, while the carved base evokes the natural terrain of a riverbank. A classic example of Kibori Kuma carving, it reflects the rich folk-art tradition of Hokkaido and the exceptional skill associated with these iconic works.
