English Fox Hunt Oil Painting on Canvas By Philip Henry Rideout (1850–1920)

19th century
Description

A late 19th-century oil on canvas by the British sporting artist Philip Henry Rideout (1850–1920), painted circa 1892.

The work depicts the concluding moments of a traditional English fox hunt, as mounted riders in red coats converge near a country gate with hounds in pursuit. The fox is visible at the lower left of the composition.

Rideout was known for his accomplished handling of equine subjects and his ability to convey movement and atmosphere within the English landscape. Here, the focus lies on the choreography of horses and riders, the flow of the hounds, and the muted tones of the rural setting beneath a softly rendered sky. The composition reflects Victorian sporting life as it was recorded in paint during the period, offering both narrative interest and historical context.

The painting is presented in a period gilt frame that compliments the work and enhances its presence. A strong and representative example of late Victorian British sporting art, suitable for collectors of equestrian painting, and English country house interiors.

Condition

Good antique condition, with light surface wear and age-related patina consistent with its late 19th-century origin. The canvas remains stable, and the frame shows minor wear commensurate with age.
