Description

A floral still life quite unlike any other by the renowned Russian-French artist Nicholas Issaiev (1891-1977). A prominent figure of the École de Paris, Issaiev’s work is celebrated for its poetic use of colour and its rhythmic, almost musical compositions.

In this piece, Issaiev transforms a classic subject into a dynamic exploration of form and light. The sun-like blossoms, rendered with bold, radiating strokes of pink and white against a lightly cubist background, exemplify the artist’s ability to find extraordinary vitality in the everyday.

Born in Odessa and eventually settling in Paris in the 1920s, Nicholas Issaiev became a fixture of the Montparnasse art scene. He exhibited at the prestigious Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuileries, and his work is held in numerous institutional collections, including the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. His style beautifully bridges the gap between the structured Cubism of his early influences and a more liberated, emotional Fauvist palette.

Measuring 60 x 46 cm, out oil on board is signed at the upper right. Presented it a modernist gallery frame, the overall size is 68 x 54 cm.
