18th Century George III Period Painted Secretaire Tallboy, C1790

18th century
Description

Great Colour Late 18th-Century George III Painted Mahogany Secretaire Chest-on-Chest or Tallboy

A late 18th-century George III painted mahogany chest-on-chest, also known as a tallboy. The piece is divided into two sections by a moulding. The upper section has a moulded cornice over two short drawers and three long, graduating, cockbeaded oak-lined drawers, all flanked by canted corners.

The lower section features a painted secretaire drawer above two long, graduating cockbeaded drawers, again beautifully oak-lined, and stands proudly on its original shaped bracket feet. All drawers retain their original finely cast brass handles and escutcheons, enhancing its period character and authenticity.

This tallboy has a particularly good colour and patina, the painted surface and mahogany showing the gentle wear and depth expected of a well?kept Georgian piece. It is sturdy, elegant and highly practical, making it suitable for any period or character home.

A fine testament to late 18th?century craftsmanship and Georgian design, this painted chest-on-chest or tallboy would make a striking addition to any refined interior. For ease of transport and installation, the piece separates into two sections.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III secretaire tallboy is an 18th-century piece of English case furniture featuring a chest-on-chest arrangement, where one of the drawers folds forward to reveal an integrated writing desk fitted with pigeonholes and small interior drawers.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid timbers such as pine, oak, or mahogany, featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, hand-sawn back panels, and cast brass handles with pierced backplates.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetailing, structural wear consistent with long-term use around the drawer runners, hand-forged nails or screws, and aged paint showing natural craquelure rather than uniform distressing.

A secretaire tallboy functions as both vertical storage and a concealed home office desk, pairing effectively against neutral walls alongside contemporary seating and minimal tabletop accessories to highlight its architectural form.

Maintain painted finishes by keeping the chest away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a clean microfibre cloth, and avoiding harsh chemical cleansers that may compromise original paint coats.
