A portrait miniature is a small, highly detailed painting, typically executed on ivory, vellum, or card, which reached the height of its popularity in Europe during the 16th to 19th centuries as personal tokens of affection and status.

Traditional portrait miniatures from this period were typically painted in watercolour or gouache on thin slices of ivory, backed with card or metal, and encased in protective glass frames often made of gold, brass, or gilded metals.

Authentication involves examining the stippling and hatching brushwork under magnification, checking the material of the substrate, verifying the framing construction methods, and looking for artist signatures or contemporary inscriptions on the reverse.

These delicate pieces can be displayed within a gallery wall of mixed antique framed art, mounted inside a shallow vitrine, or placed on a small easel atop a mantelpiece to add historical depth and intimate scale to a room.

To prevent fading and degradation, antique miniatures should be kept away from direct sunlight, maintained in stable humidity and temperature conditions, and handled minimally while avoiding exposure to harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
