Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chinese marriage bed, often crafted as a canopy or alcove bed, is a traditional piece of furniture historically commissioned as part of a brides wedding dowry during the Qing dynasty and earlier periods. These beds served as complex, semi-private rooms within the household, incorporating decorative pierced woodwork and symbolism associated with fertility and family prosperity.

These beds were typically constructed using native Asian hardwoods and softwoods such as elm, cypress, pine, or huanghuali. The frames were frequently joined using complex mortise-and-tenon carpentry without metal nails, then finished with layers of natural urushi lacquer and hand-carved relief panels.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature traditional joinery techniques, such as floating panel construction and un-nailed mortise joints, along with natural lacquer wear. Look for hand-carved details in the lattice railings, natural age-related craquelure in the lacquer finish, and evidence of historical hand tools on the structural timbers.

A Chinese marriage bed functions as an architectural focal point in a master bedroom, guest suite, or open-plan living area. Designers often dress the wooden platform with neutral linen bedding to create contrast against the dark red lacquer, or place the structure in a maximalist space surrounded by contemporary textiles and art.

Lacquered wooden furniture should be kept away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and high humidity to prevent timber movement and finish cracking. Clean surfaces gently using a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical solvents, harsh detergents, or silicone-based polishes.
