This “Antique Oak Dresser - Georgian Late 18th/ Early 19th Century” found a buyer.

It was listed by M Cross Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A nicely proportioned late 18th/early 19th-century oak dresser. Of charmingly naive construction, particularly noticeable on the upper plate rack, with some fantastic iron hooks to the front of the shelves. The base has two frieze drawers, both having brass swan neck handles, and is stood on turned legs with a lower stretcher and pot board.

Structurally sound, the overall condition is very good. As you can see from the images, this dresser has a wonderful deep rich colouration. We have noted some historic worm damage to the rear right leg and have treated this once again as a precautionary measure.

A Georgian oak dresser is a traditional storage and display unit produced during the Georgian period, spanning from 1714 to 1830, typically featuring a base with drawers or cupboards and an upper plate rack.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid English oak, often incorporating hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawers, pegged mortise and tenon joints, and brass drop handles or batwing pulls.

Authenticity is identified through period construction indicators such as hand-planed timber surfaces, irregular board widths on the back panels, forged iron or early brass hardware, and natural timber ageing and oxidisation.

An antique oak dresser provides functional storage and display space, working effectively in contemporary rustic, country house, or eclectic interiors to display ceramic collections or everyday tableware.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources, and periodically treating the timber with traditional beeswax to nourish the wood without sealing it.
