Paul Philippe Russian Dancer Art Deco Chryselephantine Bronze & Ivory Sculpture

1900 - 1920
Description

Paul Philippe – “Russian Dancer” (Danseuse Russe) Art Deco Chryselephantine Bronze & Ivory Sculpture, Circa 1925

Signed on the onyx base: “P. Philippe”

A superb and iconic Art Deco chryselephantine sculpture by Paul Philippe (Polish/French, 1870–1930), titled “Russian Dancer” (Danseuse Russe). Created circa 1925, this exquisitely balanced figure captures Philippe’s celebrated ability to portray elegance, youth, and movement in sculptural form.

This example showcases chryselephantine construction, with the head, arms, and upper torso delicately carved from ivory, while the dress and lower figure are rendered in gilt and patinated bronze. The dancer stands gracefully en pointe, arms extended in an expressive pose typical of Philippe’s most desirable works.

The sculpture is mounted on an impressive turned variegated green onyx base, also signed P. Philippe on the front edge. Philippe’s dancers are among the most sought-after Art Deco bronzes, known for their refinement, glamour, and exceptional craftsmanship.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chryselephantine sculptures originally described Ancient Greek statues made of gold and ivory, but the term was revived during the late 19th and early 20th centuries to denote figures combining carved ivory elements with cast bronze.

Art Deco sculptures commonly feature cold-painted, patinated, or gilded bronze combined with carved ivory components, mounted on bases crafted from marble, onyx, or alabaster.

Authentic pieces generally display precise casting details, foundry marks or artist signatures, natural age patina on metal surfaces, and delicate fine grain or Schreger lines visible in ivory details.

Position the sculpture as a focal point on a mantelpiece, console table, or lit display cabinet, pairing it with clean minimalist backdrop elements to highlight its intricate silhouette.

Keep the sculpture away from direct sunlight, moisture, and temperature fluctuations, dusting gently with a dry soft-bristled brush and avoiding chemical cleaners on delicate surfaces.
