An aneroid barometer is a device for measuring atmospheric pressure without using liquid, invented in the mid-19th century as a more portable alternative to mercury barometers.

Traditional barometers typically feature brass, bronze, or turned wood casings enclosing a paper or enamel dial beneath glass, with precision metal internal mechanisms.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-engraved or traditional printed dials, heavy cast brass bezels with patination, and mechanical components consistent with historical manufacturing techniques.

An antique barometer can be mounted on a panelled wall, placed on a mahogany mantelpiece, or positioned on an office desk to add a layer of historical interest and utilitarian charm.

Keep the instrument away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture, avoid using abrasive chemical cleaners on the brass casing, and consult a specialist horologist for internal calibration.
