Description

From a lifelong collection of Mason's Ironstone. A pair of Coffee cups, circa 1890, made in the shape of early 19th-century custard cups. Quite difficult to find with saucers, as people collected them as custard cups without the saucers.

Made in the late 1890, they were designed as a coffee cup, but had flaws with heat and the handle, so not huge amounts were made. This has led to them being very hard to find and people collecting .

This is an unusual design with the birds in orange. Both in perfect condition

Declaration

Vanbrugh West Antiques Ltd has dated these Masons Ironstone Custard Cups to the Victorian era.

Masons Ironstone is a type of heavy earthenware patented by Miles Mason in 1813, designed to be a durable and affordable alternative to imported Chinese porcelain while featuring vibrant, often Asian-inspired transfer-printed and hand-painted designs.

Ironstone is composed of a mixture of clay, feldspar, china stone, and scoria, fired at high temperatures to achieve stone-like durability, and typically decorated with hand-applied polychrome enamels and gilt highlights.

Authentic pieces often feature impressed or printed crown and banner marks containing the Masons name, alongside a dense, heavy ceramic body and characteristic Imari-style hand-painted motifs.

These small decorative vessels work well displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, on open kitchen shelving, or used as refined occasional catchalls on a desk or mantelpiece.

Antique ironstone should be washed strictly by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding soaking and abrasive scrubbers to protect the delicate hand-painted enamel and gilt details.
