Early 18th Century Oak Antique Dresser

18th century
Description

An early eighteenth century oak low dresser c1720 - 1730, with three drawers and two doors either side of a central panel, the full width cupboard providing plenty of storage space. The dresser has a fabulous colour and patina, and combined with its pleasing proportions, presents beautifully.

This dresser was sourced from a local property and has been in the family for as long as the seller can remember. It is a substantial and heavy piece of furniture that has real presence - it looked fantastic standing in the flagstoned hallway of their 17th century home.

The drawers have ovolo moulded edges, and the central drawer and right hand drawer have locks (though no key). The doors have raised and fielded panels, with the same detail replicated on the central panels and end panels. The doors are hung on H hinges - neither pair are original but the ones on the left door are significantly older than those on the right. The locks on the doors are replacements and don’t work, but we have found an old iron key that fits into the escutcheon to use as a handle. The drawer handles are not original but suit the piece well, and you can just see the outline of where oval plate handles have sat previously. The whole piece has a lovely colour and patina, with atht lovely finish that can only be achieved by years of wax polishing.

Condition: Externally the dresser is in very good order, the only flaws the holes and slight discolouration left by the original hinges on the doors and frame, an area of damage to the corner of the ovolo moulding on the central drawer, and typical wear to the feet. The drawers run smoothly. Internally, when we acquired it it had a plywood shelf and part of the base had been replaced with plywood, with the remainder of the base in poor condition. We have therefore replaced the base with reclaimed oak boards, stained to match the rest of the dresser, and have similarly fitted a central shelf, also using reclaimed oak boards. There are old woodworm holes in the back and in parts of the sides and feet - this does not appear to be active but we have treated it as a precaution. The drawer bases are replacements.
