Description

Here’s a very nice antique pine wardrobe featuring a curved crown at the top with a decorative carving in the centre. The two doors have beautifully carved panels, adding plenty of character and charm.

The wardrobe is panelled on the sides and stands on its original bun feet at the front, with square blocks at the back — a classic design feature of its period. It’s in lovely condition for its age, dating from 1924 (as seen in the carving at the top).

Inside, there’s currently a fitted shelf. You can either keep the shelf and add a hanging rail beneath it or remove the shelf and place the rail higher up to make use of the full hanging height. With an internal depth of 21", it’s ideal for hanging coats, suits, and other garments.

The wardrobe fully dismantles for delivery, making it easy to move up any stairway. Delivery and assembly can be arranged — just provide your postcode for a quote.

Available for £900 as it is, or £997 if you’d like it waxed.

Dimensions: height 83.5", width 54.5", depth 23.5", internal depth 21" (approximately 212 cm x 138 cm x 60 cm, internal depth 53 cm).

Pine wardrobes gained widespread popularity during the 19th and early 20th centuries as practical bedroom storage solutions. Often crafted regionally using locally sourced softwood, these pieces became staples in farmhouses and country homes due to their versatility and ample capacity.

These items are typically constructed from solid deal or Scots pine, utilising traditional joinery methods such as tongue and groove panelling, dovetail joints in drawer construction, and pegged frames. Many period pieces were specifically designed to be modular or dismantle completely using wedge-tenon or bolt systems to facilitate transport through narrow stairwells.

Authentication relies on examining tool marks, timber characteristics, and hardware. Genuine period pieces often display hand-sawn or pit-sawn lumber marks, irregular grain patterns, hand-forged or cast iron fixings, and historical shrinkage cracks rather than uniform modern machining.

An antique pine wardrobe introduces warmth and organic texture to modern neutral bedrooms, serving as a functional contrast against minimalist plaster walls or crisp white paintwork. It can be paired with modern brass hardware or kept in its natural stripped finish to anchor a rustic scheme.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels and avoiding direct exposure to intense sunlight or heat sources to prevent timber splitting. Surfaces should be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally treated with natural beeswax rather than modern silicone-based polishes.
