Pearlware is a type of refined earthenware developed in Britain by potters like Josiah Wedgwood in the late 18th century, characterised by a faint blue-tinted glaze designed to mimic Chinese porcelain, and remained popular through the early 19th century.

These pieces were typically thrown on a potters wheel using fine white earthenware clay, then hand-painted with metallic oxide colours or decorated with transfer printing before being glazed and fired.

Authenticity is generally identified by the characteristic pooled blue tint in the glaze recesses, crazing lines appropriate to age, hand-painted polychrome details, and weight and feel consistent with historical earthenware bodies.

They can be displayed on open shelving, mantelpieces, or sideboards as sculptural objects, or used functionally as vases for dried botanicals to add historical texture and character to modern rooms.

To preserve the glaze and any delicate hand-painted decoration, these pieces should be cleaned by hand using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh abrasives, dishwashers, and prolonged immersion in water.
