Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1880s.
The powder was prepared from substances such as finely ground salt, sand, or powdered soft minerals such as talc or soapstone.

The owl is lucky enough to have retained it's two amber coloured glass eyes, both without damage. The top of his head is pierced sympathetically with the feathers to dispense the fine powder. The head is of course removed to refill.
Excellent condition, measuring 3" tall.
