FAQs

Nineteenth-century British watercolour paintings typically focus on natural landscapes, coastal scenes, and topographical accuracy, often characterised by atmospheric washes and delicate detail.

These works were typically created using gum arabic-based watercolours applied to handmade rag paper or watercolour board, often set within wooden frames behind protective glass.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of the paper watermark, artist signature style, pigments consistent with the era, and signs of natural ageing such as light foxing.

An antique watercolour adds character and depth when hung as part of a curated gallery wall or displayed individually against a neutral wall with appropriate museum-grade framing.

Preservation requires framing with UV-filtering glass, maintaining stable humidity levels, and hanging the artwork away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and paper degradation.
