Still Life Oil Painting Of Dog Roses By Henry George Moon
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Prometheus Antiques
A fine oil on canvas of dog roses by Henry George Moon 1857-1905. A really superb piece by this specialist flower painter it depicts a vase of dog roses against a brown background which makes the flowers spring from the canvas. The composition is very much in the style of the Aesthetic Movement and Japanese art with an asymmetrical balance. The technique is impressionist in manner with the use of a broad brush expertly handled. The work is in excellent condition; I am suspicious that it was worked on paper and laid to the canvas later. The painting is signed to the lower left and dated 1894. Henry George Moon was born in 1857, the son of a Parliamentary agent at Westminster. He started his career by studying law, but found the art world too attractive and left the law behind him. In 1880 he joined the art staff of ‘The Garden’ and his success there led to a commission by the ‘Orchid King’ Frederick Sander of St. Albans, for paintings of orchids for the great ‘Reichenbachia’. This monum...ental work on orchids was eventually published in four volumes from 1888-1901. For much of this time Moon was living in St Albans where he married Elizabeth, Frederick Sander’s daughter. He continued to do freelance work for ’The Garden’ and ‘The Orchid World’ and several other periodicals during these years. Moon was not a great exhibitor but he did have works hung at The Royal Academy and all the major London galleries and was represented by the Fine Art Society. He was a talented landscape artist as well as a botanical illustrator. This work represents a fine example of his floral work with a particularly interesting and decorative style away from purely botanical illustration. The work has been framed recently with a modern slip and antique frame; this works very well. The whole is a great decorative work that is ready to hang.
